Rename TFS Work Item Type

While customizing TFS work item type we might feel like changing the work item type name itself. So there is an easy an fool proof way to achieve it thought command line. Here is the command

witadmin renamewitd /collection:”http://tfs-server-name:8080/tfs/collection-name” /p:Project-Name /n:”User Story” /new:”Job”

So the command mentioned above will change the name of  “User Story” work item type to “Job”.

For detailed help use witadmin renamewitd /?

Note: this command is applicable for both TFS 2012 and TFS 2010

Thanks! This worked well for me, but opened up another issue. I renamed ‘Product Backlog Item’ to ‘Feature’. The Web Access homepage for the project in question has added the Feature work item type to the more drop down (where you can create new work items). Pressing the + Product Backlog Item button now results in an ajax exception dialog popping up.

Is there a way to replace/edit the +Product Backlog Item button so that instead of trying to create a new PBI it creates a new Feature instead?

I think you are referring to TFS 2012 webAccess portal. I am able to reproduce this issue. I think it is a bug.
Though, in “More” dropdown you will see this renamed item.
